Students receive their University of British Columbia Merit Awards when they enter their first year at UBC, and the scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years of study. The amount and level of these scholarship awards granted every year vary, based on available funding.

International Major Entrance Scholarship
International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES) are granted to excellent foreign candidates enrolling in undergraduate degree programs at University of British Columbia. Candidates get their IMES when they enter their first year at UBC, and the scholarship awards are renewable for up to three more years of study. The number and level of these scholarship awards granted every year vary, based on available funding.
Outstanding International Student Award
The Outstanding International Student (OIS) merit award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship award granted to qualified candidates when they are granted admission to UBC. Candidates chosen for this merit award show strength academically and engage in extracurricular activities outside of the classroom.

Eligibility for University of British Columbia Merit Awards
To be considered for the University of British Columbia Merit Awards, you must:
- Be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college)
- Be a foreign candidate who will be schooling at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your award eligibility.)
- Display excellent academic accomplishment and intellectual promise, and also impressive extracurricular and community participation.
- Apply to UBC before the closing date.
How to Apply for University of British Columbia Merit Awards
Interested and qualified? Visit University of British Columbia (UBC) on ssc.adm.ubc.ca to submit an application.
If you apply to UBC by January 15, you will be automatically considered for the University of British Columbia Merit Awards.
As soon as you obtain an offer of admission to UBC, you’ll be automatically given consideration for these merit-based awards. Consideration is on the basis of your proven academic accomplishment and your extracurricular participation.
